What is Root Canal?
Your tooth’s center contains pulp, a collection of blood vessels that help build the surrounding teeth. Pulp infection can happen due to trauma, deep decay, cracks, chips, or repeated dental procedures. If you’re dealing with any of these issues, we may recommend a non-surgical root canal to remove the infected pulp.
We’ll thoroughly clean and seal the root canal system. This treatment is typically done under local anesthesia and may require one or more visits depending on your needs. Success rates for root canals are about 90%.
What Happens After Treatment
Thanks to local anesthesia, you’ll feel little to no discomfort during the procedure, and you can usually return to your normal routine right away. Most patients don’t experience complications, but if something comes up, we’re here to help. To prevent further issues, continue practicing good dental hygiene.
Afterward, our restorative dentist will determine the best restoration to protect your tooth. Be sure to follow up with us for any necessary appointments.
Advanced Precision Technology
At First Coast Dental Center, we use advanced Cone Beam CT scanners to create detailed 3-D images of your teeth and surrounding areas. This technology gives us a clearer view of your tooth, bone, and sinuses, allowing us to make accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.

Advanced Surgical Operating Microscopes
We use high-powered surgical microscopes to provide our endodontist with precise details when treating or retreating challenging root canals. These microscopes give us a level of precision previously unavailable, ensuring we can deliver the best possible care.

Digital Imaging
We only use digital X-rays in our practice, which reduce radiation exposure and provide clearer, more detailed images compared to traditional X-rays. This advanced imaging helps us make accurate diagnoses and treatment plans while ensuring your safety and comfort.
Pain-free Root Canals
Your comfort is our priority. We offer gentle inhaled sedation (laughing gas) and other sedation options to ensure your visit is as comfortable as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I extract my tooth instead of a root canal?
Our primary goal is always to keep your natural teeth, if possible. The single most important benefit of root canal therapy is that you keep your tooth. Unnecessary extraction may lead to other dental problems and replacing missing teeth with bridges or implants would be more expensive.
Will I need a crown after my root canal?
Most posterior teeth (molars and premolars) will require a crown on the tooth following treatment to return strength to the tooth. If you already have a crown, the crown can often be saved and restored with a tooth-colored filling after treatment.
Can a root canal be "redone"?
Yes, root canals can be redone or “retreated”. If a tooth becomes re-contaminated any time after the initial root canal, there may be a need for retreatment.
Is a root canal painful?
Your comfort is our top concern. You can trust our team to ensure your root canal procedure will be smooth and painless. With modern techniques and varied local anesthetic solutions, it is rare to have any sensation in the tooth during treatment.
